In “The Treadmill,” Sam Fender paints a picture of someone stuck in a loop of self-doubt, comparison, and overthinking. The narrator is literally on a treadmill trying to “pull my shit together,” but metaphorically, he’s spinning without moving forward thinking about past choices, mistakes, and feeling weighed down by his own expectations and feelings. As people around him (like Shaun and Rosie) move on “getting married” he feels unprepared for life’s milestones, even the small ones (“I can’t even tie my shoes”).
