During a special livestream event, TOHO Games finally unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Sakuna: Hinuka’s Spirit Pilgrimage Tale ( translation from Tensui no Sakuna Hime: Hinuka Junreitān (天穂のサクナヒメ~ヒヌカ巡霊譚~)) — a brand-new free-to-play spin-off of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. The trailer gives fans a clearer look at how this new title blends farming, exploration, and action in a more accessible format while retaining the essence of the original game.
While the gameplay has been simplified compared to the main installment, Hinuka’s Spirit Pilgrimage Tale preserves the series’ signature rice-growing system. Players can cultivate up to 15 different rice varieties, with each harvest directly influencing Sakuna’s combat stats. Additionally, harvested rice can be cooked into dishes that grant buffs before venturing into battles against monsters scattered across the islands.
One major change this time is the addition of a party-based combat system. Instead of fighting alone, players can now form a team of multiple characters they’ve recruited throughout their journey to face powerful enemies and challenging bosses.
Story-wise, the game follows Sakuna-hime and her companions as they explore a mysterious archipelago that suddenly emerges from the sea. There, they encounter Hinukahime, a young girl searching for her missing father, guided only by fragmented memories. Together with new friends met along the way, players will farm, explore, and slowly uncover the deep mysteries surrounding the islands.
Pre-registration is now open across all supported platforms — Android, iOS, and Steam for PC. Unfortunately, the initial release will be region-locked to Japan, but hopefully if the game performs well, TOHO Games might consider launching a global version in the future.
