From 1639 to 1854, to the western world, it appeared that Japan had closed itself to the world. But from their perspective, Japan had plenty of interaction with the outside world. Kokugaku and Rangaku, the most prominent intellectual movement of the Edo period was developed during their so called "isolationist" period, Sakoku.
