SafeWrap is a paradigm-shifting restraint system that teaches officers how to establish and maintain control of a resisting subject in the lateral position, maximizing control while facilitating free breathing.
When SafeWrap was first introduced in 2024, the concept was met with significant skepticism. While the medical monitoring advantages were clear, many traditional use-of-force instructors questioned whether lateral restraint could ever provide the same level of control as conventional prone restraint, much less improve upon it.
In 2025, the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths (IPICD) requested and received permission to independently study the first 130 documented field applications of SafeWrap to evaluate how the system was performing in real-world encounters.
In this presentation, John Peters, Ph.D., and Darrell Ross, Ph.D., unveil their independent research findings on stage at the California Force Instructors Association (CALFIA) Annual Conference.
Their presentation is followed by an in-depth demonstration from SafeWrap founder Rener Gracie, who explains the principles, mechanics, and real-world applications of the system.
Together, the research findings and technical demonstration challenge one of the longest-standing assumptions in arrest and control: that prone positioning is necessary to achieve maximum control of a resisting subject.
SafeWrap Instructor Certification is included in the widely-adopted Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) program for law enforcement and in the Gracie Medical Defense (GMD) program for healthcare institutions.
Standalone SafeWrap Instructor Certification can also be achieved in a abridged 2-day course or through online certification for organizations seeking the fastest path to implementation.
