What does it take to prepare the next generation of wildland firefighters? At the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, students in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources are gaining hands-on experience through Forest Fire Field Day.
Held at the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center, this training gives students the chance to build firelines, handle essential tools, practice fire shelter deployment and strengthen the teamwork and communication skills required in real fire situations. For students interested in joining the UK Fire Cats or earning additional wildland fire certifications, this field experience is an important step forward.
The UK Fire Cats program reflects the college’s land-grant mission by connecting classroom learning with real-world service, career preparation and community impact across Kentucky.
