According to official records, Saddam was born in 1937. His home outside the city of Tikrit was a mud hut with no running water, no electricity and scarce food. Chief among those challenges was the fact that Saddam’s father had died before he was born. His early years were shaped by his cruel and exacting stepfather. “Hassan the Liar”, as he was locally known, would often beat his step-son with an asphalt-covered stick. To defend himself from bullies, little Saddam started carrying an iron bar whenever he left the family hut. In this harsh environment, a sense of self-reliance and suspicion began to form the contours of Saddam’s personality. Saddam would be rescued from his life of poverty when he was 10 years old and sent to live with his uncle Khairullah Talfah in Tikrit. Under his tutelage, Saddam learned to read, write, and spell his own name. He also learned about Iraq’s complicated and contentious place on the world stage.
