hello everyone, here are some thoughts on the Great Sabrina Carpenter Controversy of 2025--a distraction from real political issues for sure, but also an interesting peek into how major labels are managing (white) artists with a great amount of care. carpenter herself has made multiple left-leaning statements, but not ones that dig into politics very much at all. and that's okay; or is it? should we not demand more of the classes of people whose job is to be idolized, celebrated, and enriched by working and middle class fans, especially when they belong to the most privileged backgrounds? especially when they are suddenly putting out art that ambiguously treads into controversial territory, regarding misogyny and abuse? can we not criticize them respectfully, even if we like their work and think they mean well? and most importantly, should we not be divesting from celebrity culture, especially when it treads in a kind of white ambiguity that does little to meaningfully engage with politics? this is Not sabrina carpenter hate, but it Is celebrity industry hate, and i hope it reads that way
