Cedar Mesa Backpacking: Kane Gulch Bullet Canyon Loop Day 3 Oct 2017
Editor's Note: My sincere apologies for any usage of the term "Anasazi" in this video. "Ancestral Puebloans" is the term I should have used.
The Cedar Mesa area presents a wealth of precious archaeological sites and spectacular red rock canyon country that was originally included within the original boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument. Even though Grand Gulch is currently not within the boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument due to presidential proclamation, a permit is still required year-round for day use, overnight backpacking, and stock use in Grand Gulch, Slickhorn Canyon, Fish Canyon, Owl Canyon, North and South Forks of Mule Canyon, Road Canyon, and Lime Creek. A limited entry day-use permit is also required to visit Moon House Ruin. Brochures are available for these areas.
How to Obtain a Permit
Reservations for Cedar Mesa overnight backpacking permits and Moon House day use permits are now available to book beginning February 20, 2018 on www.recreation.gov. Permit requirements vary by time of year and activity. Please see the information below on how to obtain various Cedar Mesa permits. Information on this page applies to private, non-commercial use only. Commercial and organized groups (universities, schools, church groups, clubs, etc.) may require a Special Recreation Permit.
Overnight Backpacking Permits
From March 1 through June 15 and September 1 through October 31 (high use season), overnight backpacking permits are limited and issued on a first come, first-served basis. A maximum of 20 visitors are permitted per day for overnight trips beginning at each trailhead on Cedar Mesa. Twelve of the 20 spaces are available for reservations at recreation.gov at least five days but no more than 90 days in advance of your entry date. The eight remaining spaces may not be reserved in advance and are only available by walk-in at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station the morning of the trip. Permit fees are $8 per person during the high use season, including a $10 transaction fee for reservations. All permits (including reserved permits) must be picked-up in person at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station during the high use season. The maximum group size is 12 people.
From June 16 through August 31 and November 1 through February 28 (low use season), overnight backpacking permits must be obtained upon arrival at self-pay fee tubes at trailheads and other kiosk locations on Cedar Mesa; no reservations are required. Permit fees are $5 per person during the low use season.
Moon House Day Use Permits

Advance reservations are required for all Cedar Mesa overnight stock use and day use in Grand Gulch.
