AgniKul CosmosAgnilet is a semi cryogenic rocket engine designed for use in Agnibaan's higher stage (Agnibaan is Agnikul's orbital-class launch vehicle) --- This engine was fully designed and realized in India #MakeInIndia #aatmaNirbharBharat --- The version of Agnilet being tested here is the sea-level version & is regeneratively cooled as it would be in flight. --- Agnilet is literally just one piece of hardware from start to finish and has zero assembled parts. --- Usually, a rocket engine has 100s of components - namely injectors, igniter, cooling channels, manifolds for fuel and oxygen etc. All of these have been printed in one piece of hardware in a single shot here. So, what comes out of the 3d printer is directly ready to be fitted in a vehicle after standard post-processing. ---We are not aware of anyone across the world who has pushed 3d printing to this extent in making rocket engines. --- This manner of making rocket engines brings down the time taken to make a rocket engine to less than 72 hours. --- For this Agnilet, thrust at sea level = 1.2 kN --- Thanks to our incredibly hardworking propulsion crew for conceiving, designing, realizing and testing this engine from the scratch. #agnibaan #agnikul #semicryogenic #rocketengine #rocketenginetest #madeinIndiaForTheWorld #startupIndia #3dprinting #additiveManufacturing

It was Mission 01 of Agnibaan SOrTeD.
Today, we want to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone - the Dept. Of Space, IN-SPACe, various ISRO centers, customers, investors, advisors from ISRO, IITM, Dept of Science and Technology, TDB, KSUM, Govt of Tamil Nadu, Govt of Andhra Pradesh, our vendors, suppliers and other mentors - that made this possible and remind ourselves that this is just one of the many missions we will accomplish.
Here is a video that captures snippets from the launch day, showing moments of teamwork, tension, triumph, and the post launch event we had that day. (A previous rough cut about the launch is youtube.com/watch?v=3J2Lnck_vgU )
About Agnibaan SubOrbital Technology Demonstrator (SOrTeD) : Controlled rockets are hard - our in-house autopilot had to work along with our aerodynamic models, and our engine, allowing for a lift off from our launchpad while seamlessly executing 1000s of lines of in-house code running on our flight and engine computers.
During this flight, SOrTeD achieved several important firsts: 1. World's First flight powered by a single-piece 3D printed engine 2. India’s first-ever semi-cryogenic engine launch 3. First-ever launch from a private launchpad in India 4. First launch from India, driven by computers running on Linux 5. First launch from India using an Ethernet-based architecture for connecting flight computers within the vehicle 6. First flight fueled by aviation-grade jet fuel and industrial-grade Liquid oxygen
Above all, this mission will always be special for us because — it flew with technology that was built in India, for the world.
To everyone who’s cheered us on, stood beside us, or simply believed — once again a huge thank you.
You continue to fuel what’s next.

This video shows the engine being throttled across a wide range of thrusts by varying the speed of the electric motor. Electric motor-driven throttling allows for higher accuracy and rapid response - important features for handling complex trajectories. Also, regarding flight readiness, this test is a key milestone towards firing a cluster of engines together.
Additionally, this system continues to use our signature single-piece engine that Agnikul has always used. Along with the patented engine, many subsystems of the pump were also 3D-printed and assembled at our AS9100D certified facility - Rocket Factory - 1. The motor drives and associated control software were also fully designed and developed in-house.

The Agnibaan SOrTeD vehicle is powered by Agnikul's own patented single piece 3D printed semi cryo engine (Agnilet) and works on data acquisition systems and flight computers that were 100% designed in-house. It was a controlled ascent flight with full 3 axis control. The autopilot was fully developed and designed in-house too. The burn time lasted 65 seconds as expected.
This mission has successfully achieved the following milestones 1. First-ever semi-cryo engine launch of India 2. First-ever launch from a private launchpad in India 3. First launch from India driven by computers working on Linux 4. First launch from India driven by an ethernet-based architecture for connecting flight computers within the vehicle 5. This engine test is powered by Agnikul's own data acquisition systems & flight computers that were 100% designed in-house.
Moreover, this test also proves the capability of the entire avionics chain of the SOrTeD vehicle in controlling the entire propulsion system of the vehicle.
Lastly, this test also runs the same Automated Launch Sequence (ALS), that we expect to run for SOrTeD's launch.
A vacuum optimised version of this Agnilet will be used in the second stage of Agnikul's orbital vehicle - Agnibaan.

These dynamics are crucial for vertical lift offs to characterize and understand all the loads during the very initial stages of flight as the vehicle lifts off from the launchpad.
There are multiple umbilicals that will have to come off in our flights and this test gave us various key parameters needed to fine tune our lift off dynamics & autopilot

This video shows some of the characterisation studies done to understand the gimbaling system hardware designed and tested in-house for our upcoming controlled suborbital mission. Controlled flights are on autopilot. During flight, trajectory deviations are corrected in real time by changing the direction of the thrust. This is done by moving the engines themselves (gimbaling the engines).

This engine was completely manufactured at Agnikul's Rocket Factory - 1.
In this particular test, we were able to fire our Agnilet engine for over and above the mission burn time as required for flight acceptance.
Sea level thrust: 6 kN Mass flow rate: 3 kg/s Propellants: Subcooled LOX at 84K & ATF (semi cryogenic engine) Burn time: 108 seconds Cooling: Regeneratively Cooled Manufacturing technique: Agnilet is a single piece rocket engine - the whole engine is 3d printed, in one shot and as a single component thereby eliminating manual assembly in manufacturing of the engine. Nozzle area ratio: If you can find the mach diamonds, you can guess the area ratio :)

Agnilet is Agnibaan's second stage engine.
In this particular test, we were able to reliably reproduce & match all the previously obtained key performance parameters of our Agnilet engine. Besides proving that 3d printed engines can be successively reused, this test will now allow us to progress towards fine-tuning Agnilet's performance for flight.

This was fully designed in-house. This milestone is going to pave the way for pump-fed engine testing shortly. A lot of this pump is 3d printed - we love 3d printing as always for all its advantages. The crew has been hard at work in coming up with a completely original design that has been specifically optimized for use in our launch vehicle - Agnibaan.

In this burn, we focused on ensuring our regeneratively cooled engine attained and stabilized at the same set of temperatures that it will operate at for longer burn times. As in, thermally, we verified if the engine would reach an equilibrium in terms of heat transfer and it sure did!
This now allows us to extend the test times to match mission burn times.
Thrust = 1.3 kN
