My Assessment: 4K 24 looks fine, stabilization works OK. 4K 60p can lead to some aliasing... no like. I cut out some of it but you can still see some that made it in. No idea if its xavc-s to blame or that its binned, cropped, breathing compensation is on, AND I had active stabilization on which crops even more... crop/crop/crop makes bad times... looks ok on mobile sometimes.
Dynamic Range is very good... no problems here. Just shoot correctly in slog3 and you're fine.
Technical Information: • Sony a7r5, Sony 50mm f1.2GM, no filters etc. because I'm lazy. • Slog3/SGamut3.cine, graded in Davinci Resolve. • XAVC-S, 4K binned, mostly 60p, some 24. It should be obvious.

Please be sure to follow along with your own footage. The results can be hard to see on YouTube, but it does work! Please be sure you are viewing in 1440p or higher quality in order to better view the demonstration.
Due to YouTube compression, even 1080p will simply not show the results properly... which is at least a demonstration of YouTube's inability to retain detail in HD.

DISCLAIMER: These filters fit in both my Smallrig Light Weight Matte Box and my Smallrig Mini Mattebox, however, the filters did NOT fit stacked together in 1 slot in the Light Weight Matte Box, but did fit stacked together in a single tray on my Mini. The Light Weight Smallrig matte box apparently does not have a wide enough slot, which is annoying, but not that big of an issue for me since I only use that one indoors and rarely need more than 2 stops of ND, if that.
Music Credit: Bensound.comR5C CRIPPLED BY DPAFI! | This Unsubstantiated Claim Explored...Tony Dae2022-01-20 | Some folks are apparently incorrectly stating that the EOS R5 and R5C have different DPAF systems for video. Not true according to the spec sheets from Canon Europe, the most trustworthy Canon website I am aware of that I can read. Canon USA is often not updated.
Since people on YouTube often do not cite sources appropriately or check to see if some other person has their facts wrong, its anyone's guess as to where this information came from. The only thing I can conclude is either A: somebody misread something and is spreading false information or B: There are contradictory spec sheets floating around out there from Canon. Either way there is not proof that the DPAF systems are different between the two cameras.
The only thing I can conclude is that these cameras have the same DPAF version in video mode, as stated by the manufacturer.
I NEVER shoot S-Cinetone or any other baked in Rec709 look when I have even a tiny bit of post-production budget. Proper 10 bit log will provide a lot more room to make corrections if they are needed, as shown here, and will provide far more room for color grading as well. Here we explore what happens when we shoot in the wrong white balance and how much room we have to correct easily and efficiently.

Note: I used ISO 250 to match Rec709 transform from S-Log3 to make it easier to compare. You may wonder, why not base ISO of 100? It would require more exposure adjustments I wasn't going to make for this test and it would not prove anything anyways. S-Cinetone will ALWAYS have lower dynamic range compared to Slog3, Always. It isn't a debate or up for negotiation. If you do not believe me or Sony, you can try your own tests and choose whichever ISO levels you like, in fact, I encourage you to do so.

Join us on Discord! discord.gg/5hcfee2bYPDoes Brand Color Science Really Matter? | Challenging Perceptions on Brand Color ScienceTony Dae2021-08-07 | In this video we look at 5 different cameras from less than 5 brands and determine how important input color science from the manufacturer really is for real world rec709 results. At least 1 camera is (according to the online community) supposed to have some of the worst color science, and at least 1 camera (according to the online community) is supposed to have some of the best color science.
We do not compare all brands in this video because I cannot get access to controlled test material of ALL brands available in the same setting, but we can extrapolate from what we learn here. This sample ought to be enough to get a more broad understanding of input brand color science and how much that matters for our end results achieved. Is there special sauce? And if there is, does that really even matter for our end results?
We ask, "is good or bad Color Science more of a function of what we do with data from a camera, or is it an inherent quality from a brand's special sauce? As long as a camera gives us enough data to do what we want, does it really matter what the input color science is?"
By looking at this more empirically, we can more easily select our tools, codecs, etc. based on needs and actual measurable things (dynamic range, resolution, malleability in the grade, sharpness, noise), thus be more free in our creative expression.
Big thank you to Carlos Quintero for the test material!
