The Light Shift

Editors note: The piano music that plays at the end is called "Franklyn" by Michael Nyman. It's one of my favourite pieces of music and I've wanted to use it in something for ages. When I put it at the end of this video it originally felt like it was a bit too much, I worried it sounded overbearing and dramatic. Putting music underneath yourself is kind of an odd thing to do. But I decided to keep it. 1. I love the song and 2. I wanted to try to not be afraid to be sincere, to commit to something that sounds overdramatic even though thats how things felt.

The feelings of when I finished "Like a Dog or a Boat, you tether it" felt as dramatic and profound as a scene that would warrant some nice ol' piano music, despite it just being me hunched over my laptop whilst sitting on my friends laptop after having spent all day exporting the video at the YouTube Space in London.

That night, sending the video off to my friends and family for feedback is one of the happiest nights of my life. That sounds dramatic, too much, but it was. Its up there as one of the bests. Just sitting by myself with my phone vibrating in hour and a half intervals, hearing back from different people and with each hour closer to the morning everything feeling more real. It wasn't just 2 years in my head, it was all slowly coming out and becoming alive. It didn't feel cheesy, although descibing it might sound it, I just felt real. I didn't have to preface it with something to undercut that feeling, it was just sincerely a very good evening.

surprisingly i learnt a lot about myself and video making, especially about what i capture and when. looking back now in a more positive mindset of NOT BEING LOST in paris i can see lots of opportunities for cool shots and things i should have gotten and said. i could have done a whole “the train station/streets of paris are our new home for 6 hours” and then built to the final excitement of the trains actually opening, but i suppose youre not as quick to reach for the camera in moments when youre not as upbeat as usual. but theres stories in everything. and i only tend to notice those in moments later when the not so good thing has happened. cos a late night explore of underground paris would have been cool! but also, in another way, it seems kind of dehumanizing to want to capture the honesty of something negative. because as soon as you become aware of the event being a struggle and an opportunity for adventure through sadness do you start to product that emotion as you realise its entertainment? is it impossible to try to vlog genuine distress as a part of you always plays it up to the camera? or is the displayed way the only way that emotion can be seen on film? it reminds me of a photography project where a woman took a photo of herself every time she cried. eventually when she was crying, arguing with her boyfriend, she had to break away from the moment to get her camera, resulting in her boyfriend saying something along the lines of “is this real?” he couldnt tell what was the project and when it was real, or why she even had to capture the sadness. i suppose filming takes you out of the emotion, and in deep emotion you can only really feel the thing youre feeling and can never see a reason to want to capture it. but some of the best stories can happen out of a negative emotion. and there are stories in everything, and everything can be interesting. a walk from home, a train delayed, a moment of burning something when breaking up from a relationship. just a ramble about filming shit. hopefully it made sense. but all was not lost, of course, from not filming late night in paris. sure, i didnt get those cool shots. but i got this insight. and thats what i got. - written at 7am on the train back

This video came about whilst I was editing a video about what shapes us into who we are. It was bad and I was over thinking it. I doubt myself a lot. That was at 11pm and I just thought "Why dont I make a video about this? I might feel better about all the videos I've failed to make if I channel that negative energy into a video. So I just started filming. The next day I decided would be the first day of a new healthy life! Cycling every single day, cycling everywhere for hours! ...Then my tyre exploded. Thanks, universe!

(more behind the scenes, that horrible clip of me and plsryan sitting in a dark room with the sounds of vomit was when we went into an art museum not realising it was a VERY VERY MODERN art museum. just lots and lots of empty rooms playing videos of people being sick. we quickly left)

for people saying "you threw the bike away??" you dont actually see how badly the bike broke. it wasnt just a flat tyre. the whole rim of the tyre split in two. it cost more to fix the tyre than id actually spent on the whole bike. id had the bike since 2007, my knees were hitting the handle bars, so it was on its way out. THE BIKE HAD A GOOD LIFE DO NOT WORRY.

(also no i didnt make a typo of the word 'innuendo' innendo is actually how its spelt...maybe)

Thanks to Ray for the America Diner Footage. What an experience. A fun thing I like to do during a big meal is to lean into my food and whisper "ill see you later". Don't do that on a first date though.

"It's a lot more lifelike, the moment, staring back unblinking in a carved face of a 3D model. There is something a little more relaxing though about seeing a memory, a moment, sealed behind a photo frame, the window of time. Will the two live side by side? Will the new replace the old? Not completely, I think. But certain moments, ones you wish to open the window on, to feel the breeze and feel the wrinkles of skin on a loved one now passed or the specific way a dress hung on a wedding day: I think they'll become more cherished in 3D. A physical memory, standing and looking out from the mantel piece, one with a back, reminding you more than a photo that this was all once real."

this was my attempt to make something inspired by PBFB, MorganPaigeLoves and AngryFilmsProductions. I've been working recently hence my YouTube absense but its cos im saving £££ so i can HOPEFULLY go to vidcon next year :D

now ive got a job and im working on a few other things - things that i put off going to Uni to search for - im feeling a lot happier and feeling more able to make videos. just felt a bit uncreative and unclear of myself when i was searching for a job and getting rejected from different bits. also i was in the FOREVER TRAIN DID YOU SEE ME??
