Hiking Red Rocks Park DENVER, CO Rugged Mile 2024-05-03 | Red Rocks Park, just outside of Denver, CO has more than just a world famous amphitheater, it has hiking trails! If you are in town for a concert and looking for something to do in the area these trails are really nice. Jen and I hiked the Morrison Slide to Red Rocks trail which is just over 3 miles with 700 feet of elevation gain. The trail has some loose rock and gravel but is mostly easy and well maintained. The trails here offer unique views of the rock formations and Denver!

The STANLEY Rugged Mile 2023-10-28 | The Stanley Hotel, located in Estes Park, Colorado. We decided to visit while waiting for our timed entry ticket into RMNP. The cost is $10 for parking and you are given a commemorative coin that can be used for $5 credit inside. There are a number of guided tours that can be taken for an additional fee, however we enjoyed just walking around and exploring on our own. Some parts of the hotel are off limits unless you are a staying guest. A Civil War Viewpoint of CHATTANOOGA, TN Rugged Mile 2023-07-05 | POINT PARK BATTLEFIELD | Atop Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. This historic park, rich in history provides awesome views of the Tennessee River Valley and the city of Chattanooga from high above. There are plenty of attractions on Lookout Mountain to keep a family busy sightseeing for a few days(Rock City Gardens, Ruby Falls, the Incline Railway to name a few) but it seems like Point Park may get overlooked by some. From the history and stories told within the visitor center and the neighboring museum to a walk on the actual battlefield to get a perspective of what these Civil War soldiers may have seen from their perch high above the city. Admission is $10 per person 16 and up. If you have an annual National Parks Pass, admission for yourself and 3 guests is free. Besides the history and views there are numerous hiking trails that can be accessed from within the park. The MOST INCREDIBLE DRIVE in America! Rugged Mile 2023-03-01 | Montana is full of majestic beauty and scenic roadways, but this has to be right up at the top of the list. The Beartooth Highway (U.S. Route 212) is a 68 mile long road that winds its way from Red Lodge, Montana to Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance. Located within the beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in south central Montana this All-American highway gives you spectacular views of some of the most rugged and wild areas of the lower 48 states. Because of its high elevation at 10,947 feet the pass is only open during summer months and subject to some of the harshest weather conditions year round. As you traverse your way up the through the mountains, stop at one of the many pull-off areas and soak in the views! Besides the scenic drive there are numerous trails to hike and over 900 mountain lakes to explore along the way! Make sure to check road conditions before you plan your travels. At the time of this recording in August 2022 Yellowstone National Park's northeast entrance was still closed due to the flooding from June 2022's historic 500 year flood. THEODORE ROOSEVELT National Park, North Dakota Rugged Mile 2023-02-16 | Located in Western North Dakota, where the Great Plains meet the rugged badlands is Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The beautifully colored hills and buttes of the North Unit surround you as you drive the scenic road through the park. Numerous stops along the way reveal mysterious formations and wonderful vistas of the Little Missouri River Valley. The South Unit located near Medora is just as spectacular and the drive here allows an up close look at the bison prairie dogs and some more elusive wild horses that roam the park. We drive for several hours across the barren plains of Montana until finally, something in the distance appears. The snow covered peaks of the Rocky Mountains make their first appearance. The contrast between the different terrain is incredible. We make our way towards the East side of Glacier National Park on Hwy 89. When the park is in sight, you know it! Unbelievable beauty opens from North to South and East to West. This land clearly reveals God's creation. There are many tourist present like most National Parks, but most visitors here seem to be affected in a way that cannot be described without being here. We were blessed to have our Dad and Grandpa join us. It was his first ever trip to the Western US and nothing would keep this 75 year old from enjoying it. From hiking up and down steep ledges for better views to kayaking on Lake McDonald. Glacier National Park is a place that can be enjoyed in many ways. Whether its high adventure and hiking or just driving the Going-to-the-sun road and stopping at the numerous pull offs to take in breathtaking views. Glacier has it all. Any age, anytime. TAHQUAMENON FALLS State Park, Michigans U.P. Rugged Mile 2022-11-14 | Tahquamenon Falls State Park, located in Paradise, Michigan encompasses almost 50,000 acres stretching 13 miles. The centerpiece of the park and its reason for existence is the waterfalls of the Tahquamenon River. The Upper Falls is over 200 feet wide with a 50 foot drop. A few miles downstream, the Lower Falls are a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. Both the Upper and Lower falls are easily accessible with a short walk. Admission at the time of our visit was $10 daily or $36 annually (non resident) for the State Parks Recreation Passport. The Park offers a wide variety of activities such as camping, hiking, fishing and canoeing. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a must see while visiting Michigan's Upper Peninsula! As part of our July 2022 trip to Michigan, Jen and I chose Saint Ignace as our home base for exploring the Upper Peninsula. Saint Ignace is a charming city located on the northern side of the Straits of Mackinac and is known as the gateway to the U.P. Our first night here, we stayed at the Colonial House Inn. As the only bed and breakfast in Saint Ignace it did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly and welcoming and breakfast was excellent!Our next few nights were spent at the Tiki RV Park and campground. The Tiki tents offer a convenient and cost effective way to enjoy your summer nights in the Saint Ignace area. While here, besides exploring downtown Saint Ignace we visited Castle Rock and took a drive to Newberry, MI to check out Oswald's Bear Ranch. Explore SAULT STE MARIE, MI Rugged Mile 2022-08-07 | A visit to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Home of the famous Soo Locks and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Our day included a kayaking adventure to Voyageur Island to explore, relax and witness a passing freighter up close. After heading to downtown and visiting the Soo Locks, we were able to see the freighter, Walter J. McCarthy Jr passing through the locks. Afterwards we raced back to Rotary Park to watch this massive shipping vessel pass by the park and continue on its way to Lake Huron. We had a fun time exploring the area and would highly recommend visiting here if you are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! As the northern most tip of Lower Michigan it is home to the Mackinac Bridge which connects the upper peninsula to lower Michigan. Besides the beautiful views of both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan there are a ton of things to do and see when you visit. Discover Arizonas WILD HORSES along the SALT RIVER Rugged Mile 2021-07-17 | A morning hike just outside of Phoenix, AZ in an attempt to see the wild horses of the Tonto National Forest. We first stopped at the Phon D Sutton Recreation area and walked along the river bank in search of the horses but had no such luck. We heard from a fellow hiker on the trail that some horses were spotted just up the road at the Coon Bluff Recreation area so we made the quick driver there and were rewarded by getting to view the herd across the river from us! Both of these recreation areas offer great views of the Salt River, the mountains of the Tonto National Forest and numerous wildlife. Exploring SEDONA Arizona! Rugged Mile 2021-06-15 | A spring break stop at the end of March 2021 in Sedona! Sedona, AZ is packed with beautiful scenery and tons of hiking options to explore. We did a short hike on the Mystic Trail and walked up the road to visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The Chapel is one of the most visited places in Sedona and well worth the stop! After a quick lunch we headed north of town to the Devils Bridge Trailhead to complete another of the most popular trails in Sedona! The trail was very busy but still worth the effort to make the 3.9 mile hike! APACHE TRAIL Scenic Route 88 ARIZONA Rugged Mile 2021-04-16 | The historic APACHE TRAIL a scenic stretch of highway just east of Phoenix that runs from Apache Junction to Globe, AZ. The route is one of the most scenic drives in all of Arizona and the Western U.S.! We drove the Apache Trail from Apache Junction to the Fish Creek Canyon overlook which is where the road ends currently due to damage caused by flooding in 2019. Along the way we also stopped at Tortilla Flat to explore this authentic old west town and have lunch at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant. Governor Dodge State Park is one of the largest parks in Wisconsin at over 5000 acres! It features steep hills, bluffs, deep valleys and there are also two lakes and a waterfall which was not flowing much at all when we visited in mid October 2020! There are numerous hiking trails that are dog friendly and offer a variety of great views! Although a lot of the leaves were past peak the park was still beautiful and is well worth visiting! GRAND MARAIS | Honeymoon Weekend on Minnesotas North Shore | Part 4 Rugged Mile 2021-01-29 | Part 4 from our honeymoon weekend on Minnesota's North Shore! Some highlights from our time in and around Grand Marais, MN on Jan 2, 2021! We walked along the frozen shore of Lake Superior on a windy day at Grand Marais Harbor and Artists Point and watched the incredible waves crash against the rocks and ice! The power and beauty of this Great Lake is a sight to see! We may have possibly spotted a Bernie hanging out on a rock also! Lol! Our next stop was at Fall River Falls which is just outside of Grand Marais along highway 61 as you head south. We were able to park along the highway and trailblaze a path through the snow down to the bike trail to check out this frozen fall. Our final stop was Cascade River State Park. We hiked the path to the falls which is a short but fun trail and spent some time walking along the river before making our way back. Overall the area is beautiful with lots of great things to see and do no matter the season! Camping in the U.P. PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS Rugged Mile 2020-12-05 | Our 4th of July Camping weekend at Union River Big Bear Campground on Lake Superior in Michigan's U.P. Some of the highlights from our 3 days camping, hiking and exploring the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan. Jen and I had first stayed here a year earlier and really loved the entire area! This year we brought the kids and Chipper along to share in on the fun! We once again went to Lake of the Clouds and did a few short hikes before cooling off in the clear refreshing waters of Lake Superior! The sunsets here are always awesome and even though the fireworks displays were minimal it was an Independence Day to remember! Day 3 we made a short trip to explore Bonanza Falls and see the beauty of the Iron River that eventually flows into Lake Superior. The Union River Big Bear Campground is an excellent place to stay if you plan a trip for yourself. Whether you’re tenting or have a camper or RV this campground is perfect. A very nice bathroom facility with showers located centrally brings you most of the comforts of home if you’re not into primitive camping. This is one of the top waterfalls to see in all of Michigan. The trail that loops around the falls is just under 1 mile in length.This trail allows you to get up close and personal with the cascading water that flows over the ancient volcanic rock! Hiking the UTE TRAIL Aspen Rugged Mile 2020-10-31 | Hiking the Ute Trail Aspen, Colorado. The final hike of my October 2020 trip to Aspen, Colorado. The Ute Trail is a 6.2 mile out and back hike that starts on the southeast side of the city of Aspen. It is one of the most popular trails in the entire area. The first mile of the Ute Trail is a steep 700 foot climb that leads to Ute Rock. Here you will be treated to a panoramic view of Aspen and the surrounding beauty of the Rocky Mountains! If you continue on and complete the next 2 miles you will have hiked up some of the most expert ski terrain Aspen Hill has to offer. At the top of Aspen (Ajax) Mountain you can stop in to the Sundeck and enjoy a cold beer as a reward for your hard work. The views from the top are also great! We opted to ride the Silver Queen Gondola back down to Aspen so our hike ended at 3.1 miles. Far enough for us as this hill is a beast! Red Butte Hike ASPEN COLORADO Rugged Mile 2020-10-14 | A hike up the Red Butte Trail in Aspen, Colorado. I arrived at the trailhead just before sunrise on a beautiful fall Sunday morning. The views of Aspen and the surrounding mountains are awesome from high above on this hike. The sunrise slowly paints a golden glow on the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains as it rises up over the Roaring Fork Valley!The hike itself it is an out and back and just under 1 mile and i would highly recommend it if you are in or near Aspen. AllTrails rates the hike as moderate in difficulty and it does have some fairly steep and rocky sections. CUSTER STATE PARK South Dakota Rugged Mile 2020-08-29 | Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota was our last stop on an awesome 2020 trip to the Western United States! We started on the Wildlife Loop Road and made our way up Mount Coolidge to check out the panoramic views from the fire tower. Next we were able to get up close to a large herd of Bison who were making their way south along the highway! Continuing south on Highway 87 we took a scenic detour through a section of Wind Cave National Park and headed back toward Custer. ONE DAY at GRAND TETON and YELLOWSTONE National Parks Rugged Mile 2020-08-14 | With only ONE day to explore Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks we had to make the most of our short time! A morning drive into Jackson from Afton, WY where we stayed at the historic Colters Lodge. From Jackson, we stopped at the famous Mormon Row, Schwabacher Landing then Jackson Lake and the Chapel of the Sacred Heart. The views along the drive alone are unforgettable! From Jackson Lake we entered Yellowstone at the south entrance, made a stop at Lewis Falls, stopped into the Grand Visitor Center for lunch, then followed the Grand Loop Road along Yellowstone Lake. A drive through the Hayden Valley area brought us to the spectacular Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to view the Upper and Lower Falls.
