Ryan Murphy defended his Netflix series "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" after Erik Menendez, plus 24 of his family members, criticized the show's portrayal of him and his older brother, Lyle Menendez.
The brothers were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 1996 of the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, after the pair were found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in August 1989.
Murphy co-created and co-wrote the Netflix limited series, which tells the story of the murders using a rotating point of view.
At times, the series depicts the brothers as victims of their father’s alleged sexual and physical abuse. At other times, they’re portrayed as cold-blooded killers. In some scenes, their relationship is sexually charged.
In an interview with People published on Sept. 27, Murphy responded to a statement from 24 relatives of Lyle and Erik Menendez, which called the series “a phobic, gross, anachronistic, serial episodic nightmare.”
