We Weren't Ready! History Hit Hard! We rolled into Vicksburg and Natchez on our Fantasy RV Tour, expecting scenic Mississippi River towns and some interesting history. What we found stopped us short.
These weren't just charming river communities with old buildings and Southern hospitality. These were places where some of America's most brutal chapters unfolded, and the weight of that history is still present everywhere you look.
In Vicksburg, we stood on battlefields where a 47-day siege in 1863 starved the city into submission. Soldiers and civilians suffered immensely. Families hid in caves. The death toll was staggering. Walking those grounds, reading the markers, seeing the endless rows of monuments, we felt the enormity of what happened here during the Civil War.
Then we drove south to Natchez, once one of the wealthiest cities in pre-Civil War America. That wealth came from cotton. And that cotton came from the forced labor of thousands of enslaved people who endured unimaginable cruelty and exploitation. The grand antebellum homes still stand as reminders of a prosperity built on human suffering.
Both towns are grappling with how to tell these stories honestly. Both left us quieter, more reflective, and deeply aware of how the Mississippi River connects not just geography, but some of the most painful moments in American history.
This isn't our typical RV travel video. But these are stories that need to be told.
