Rusty Schweickart is an American engineer and a former NASA astronaut, most notably as a member of Apollo 9. He was the Lunar Module Pilot on the 1969 Apollo 9 mission, the first crewed flight test of the lunar module, and he performed the first in-space test of the portable life support system used Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon. He also served as backup Commander of the first crewed Skylab mission in 1973, and was in charge of developing the hardware and procedures used by the crew who had to perform in-flight repairs of the station. Since leaving NASA he has remained active in space serving as a California government science advisor and co-founding the B612 Foundation which is dedicated to defending Earth from potential asteroid impacts. He is decorated with numerous awards including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and even an Emmy in 1969 for transmitting the first ever live TV pictures from space.
