Russia’s ZAK 30 Citadel is designed to hunt small drones that can be difficult for conventional air defence systems to detect and destroy. Its automated cannon uses programmable airburst ammunition that explodes directly in a drone’s flight path instead of relying on a precise impact. Radar, optical cameras and thermal imaging work together to find even small plastic and composite targets. An automated targeting system tracks threats and calculates firing solutions while leaving the final engagement decision to a human operator. Russia is also developing a mobile truck mounted version to protect military convoys and critical infrastructure.
