The Borei-class (Project 955) is Russia’s latest generation of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), designed to replace the aging Delta and Typhoon classes. Built for strategic nuclear deterrence, these submarines are quieter and more advanced than their predecessors, featuring improved hydrodynamics, a pump-jet propulsion system, and a modern combat suite.
Each Borei-class SSBN carries 16 RSM-56 Bulava SLBMs, which are MIRV-capable and designed to penetrate missile defenses. The class consists of multiple variants, including the upgraded Borei-A (Project 955A), which features enhanced stealth characteristics, improved sonar, and more advanced control systems.
With a submerged displacement of 24,000 tons, a length of approximately 170 meters, and the ability to operate at depths exceeding 400 meters, the Borei class is a cornerstone of Russia’s sea-based nuclear triad, ensuring second-strike capability in modern warfare.
