It was the 1980s, long before the Ukraine Russia War. 1988 to be exact, a year before the West/East German Wall came down precipitating the fall of the Soviet Union. Some American men were searching for wives and Russian and Ukrainian women had a reputation for desiring American men and a reputation for being willing to marry them.
Companies facilitated marriages between American men and women from Ukraine and Russia. One such company was called European Connections, which was founded in 1987 and had offices in both the United States and Ukraine.
As this video shows, European Connections would organize "romance tours" for American men which involved travel to Ukraine or Russia to meet women interested in marriage. The goal was to find a compatible partner.
A study by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) found that marriages between American men and foreign women had a higher success rate than marriages between American couples. 80% of marriages between American men and foreign women were still intact after 10 years, compared to 65% of marriages between American couples. Another study by the University of Florida found that couples who met through international dating services had a higher success rate than couples who met through other means.
European Connections made videos to show American men how they could date Ukrainian and Russian women with hope of finding a marriage partner and hopefully, marry them. They found many women willing to participate in the videos and meet the men and they carefully selected the women based on beauty, intelligence, English-speaking and more.
This video takes portions of the 1988 documentary and also presents news specials from CBS 60 Minutes and UK broadcasts showing that these tours still go on and that surprisingly often, they are successful for the American men and for the Ukrainian any Russian women searching a husband who will in their words, treat them with kindness, romance, and loyalty.
Of course companies like European Connections are less common today as online dating has become a more popular and accessible way for people to connect with potential partners from around the world. These days, there is online marriage counseling, online and face-to-face couples therapy and counseling, common-law spouses, couples therapy, marriage 365, premarital advice and agreements, common-law partners, and so much that makes physical trips unnecessary. And with the war between Ukraine and Russia, casual traveling to find a marital partner isn't a possibility.
