There is a persistent belief that Russia and China have joined forces against the collective West. Both countries are seen as autoritarian, traditionalist and pretty closed. Its leaders, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are considered friends, united by the common idea. What is that idea other than "we don't like the United States ruling the world"? Nobody knows for sure. Today I would like to talk about the history of relations between Russia and China, which is not as cloudless as it may seem at first glance. Destruction of Russian fortresses on the Amur River, humiliating (for Qing Dynasty) agreements in the mid-19th century. The 1949 meeting between Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin in Moscow and the armed Sino-Soviet conflict over Damansky Island in 1969. There are a lot of thing to talk about. At the same time, we will talk about the relationship between the Chinese and the Russians and try to understand how can two nations be so different and be allies at the same time.
