Welcome to another road trip through western New York. Today's drive begins at Interstate 90 near Batavia and ends at Interstate 390 near Sonyea, covering about 37 miles in roughly 50 minutes.
Although both the starting point and destination are on interstate highways, most of this journey takes place on local roads, primarily New York Routes 63 and 36. Along the way, we'll travel through two counties: Genesee County and Livingston County. Genesee County, whose name comes from a Seneca word meaning "the Beautiful Valley," is traditionally considered part of Western New York. Livingston County belongs to New York's scenic Finger Lakes region.
Our route takes us through downtown Batavia before heading south past East Bethany and Pavilion. After crossing into Livingston County, we'll continue through Leicester and Mount Morris before joining Interstate 390 near Sonyea. Batavia — History and Introduction
Batavia was founded in the early 1800s and served as the headquarters of the Holland Land Company, which managed the sale and settlement of millions of acres in western New York. Because of this role, Batavia is often considered one of the most historically significant cities in the region's early development.
Our route follows Oak Street south to West Main Street, then bears right at the fork onto Ellicott Street. Many of these streets trace the city's early layout, established when western New York was still being opened to settlement.
Today, Batavia serves as the county seat of Genesee County and acts as a regional center between Buffalo and Rochester. The city features a historic downtown district, local shops and restaurants, and several parks along Tonawanda Creek.
