The Sinclair ZX81 had no sound, no colour, no high-res graphics, a mere 1KB of memory and an almost useless membrane keyboard. It was described by reviewers as “toy-like”. So, why did something so incapable of being used as a real computer, sell over 1.5M units? And why was it the toast of North America in 1982, only to be ignored just a year later?
