I've had R-Type on the brain a lot this week, after finally getting stuck into R-Type Final 2 on the PS4. So I decided to put together a quick video comparison between the third stage of R-Type Dimensions on PS3 (in both its new and old graphics options) and the R-Type Final 2 DLC homage stage based on it.
The Gigantic Battleship stage is one of my favourite levels in any shoot-em-up ever. R-Type was one of the first games I ever got for my Sega Master system back in the day and I played the ever loving chuff out of it.
If you're a big R-Type fan, I'd highly recommend checking an e-book you can download for free called 'It's Behind You - The Making of a Computer Game' by Bob Pape. He's the guy that managed to port the original game to the ZX Spectrum back in the 80's and it's widely regarded as one of the greatest arcade ports to the humble 8-bit system ever (I had a demo of the 1st level which came with either Your Sinclair or Sinclair User. It really was an incredible conversion). It's a fascinating read, light on coding jargon, heavy on the experience of being a home computer coder back then.
