Keeping transit safe across RTD’s 2,345-square-mile service area takes specialized skills and strong partnerships.
The RTD Transit Police Department has four K-9 teams trained to help identify potential threats and locate evidence such as explosives, firearms, and shell casings. Each K-9 completes an intensive 10-week training program with their handler and continues weekly training throughout their service.
Funded through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the K-9 units regularly partner with local agencies to support investigations. Earlier this year, RTD officers and K-9 teams were recognized by the Boulder Police Department for assisting in the investigation following the June 2025 Pearl Street attack.
RTD K-9 units are just one example of how RTD Transit Police are working to keep transit a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for all.
