On May 18, 1922—a little over a century ago—Sydney and Violet Schiff, a pair of British arts patrons, threw a late-night dinner party at the Majestic Hotel in Paris to celebrate the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s opera-ballet Renard. At this soirée, the brightest lights of newborn Modernism met, mingled, clashed, and connected in ways that would influence musical, literary, artistic, and theatrical culture for decades to come. Today’s program is inspired by this extraordinary event.
