My contribution to the “Moments in the history of Optical Astronomy in South Africa” series, celebrating the 200th anniversary of of Astronomy in South Africa.
With extracts from four 8mm films, shot in the early 1970s, you will see the domes and buildings at the Sutherland Observatory being built, Dr Alan Cousins and his son, Richard, will put a few of the Cape Town Observatory telescopes through their paces, and finally back to Sutherland for the official opening ceremony of the Observatory. Quite amazing to see what Sutherland town looked like when cars lawfully parked in the middle of the main road! Very informative narration is done by retired astronomer and satellite hunter, Greg Roberts, explaining how they observed with the kine-theodilite.
