Here come the rangers from the New Zealand Department of Conservation for another weigh-in of the Northern Royal Albatross chick on August 6. Āwheo weighed 24.3 pounds (11 kg), above the average of 22.7 pounds (10.3 kg) for male chicks at 196 days old. These regular weigh-ins help monitor the chick's growth and overall health. DOC rangers are highly experienced in handling Northern Royal Albatrosses and are trained to work carefully around the birds to minimize disturbance.
The next weigh-in will be on August 18. At this age, chick weights have leveled off and will begin to decline over the next month, as is normal before fledging.
