Texas only gets 178 miles of Route 66 — but those miles pack in three of the most memorable stops on the entire 2,448-mile Mother Road. Join Jeff and Photowalks as we explore the entire route together
In Shamrock (population 1,700), the U-Drop Inn is one of the most photographed buildings on all of Route 66 — a 1936 Art Deco masterpiece that Pixar used as the model for Ramona's Body Shop in Cars. Now, it's been immortalized by the United States Postal Service on a new series of Route 66 stamps.
In Amarillo, we spray-paint a Cadillac at the legendary Cadillac Ranch (10 Cadillacs buried nose-first at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza), and attempt the famous 72oz free steak at the Big Texan — free only if you can finish it all in under an hour, along with shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad, and a roll.
And in Adrian — the official halfway point between Chicago and Los Angeles — we stop at the Midpoint Cafe (feeding travelers since 1947) for a slice of famous "ugly pie," and stand in the middle of the road. There's no traffic. It's that quiet.
