A whole host of Norman adventurers set about staking claims to the fragmenting Eastern Roman Empire in the late Eleventh Century. None was more feared in the 1070s than a certain mercenary commander named Roussel de Bailleul. His is an epic and tragic tale of greed, hubris and war. It also works as a nice precursor to the crusades and the other Norman campaigns elsewhere in Europe. (Which will be covered in upcoming videos)

It had been 15 years since they had been expelled from their strongholds in and around Dublin by a coalition of native Irishmen intent on reclaiming their lands, and now after building up their forces once more, they sought to reconquer the rich trading port first established by their ancestors over one hundred years before. The fleets were led by two men; Ragnall ua Ímair on the one side and Sitric Cáech on the other, both ambitious young pagan warriors seeking fame and glory, both members of the famous Uí Ímair dynasty which had ruled in Ireland for generations, and thus both possible descendants of Ivar the Boneless, the son of Lodbrok who had devastated the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons in England two generations before at the head of the Great Heathen Army. The many battles that took place during that fateful year of 917 would shatter the short period of peace which had followed the Viking exodus of 902, and go on to establish again a supremacy of Norse and Dane over native Irish. The Eastern Mediterranean world inhabited by the Egyptians, the Hittites and the Minoans, as well as numerous smaller states around them, was a truly cosmopolitan system rarely seen in world history. Greek and Hittite trade goods regularly show up in archaeological sites in Egypt, whereas Egyptian hieroglyphs and trade goods are found in places such as the island of Crete and Mycenae. One shipwreck off the coast of Turkey carried goods from nine different states aboard. As evidenced by substantial diplomatic communications as well as trade, the world of the Late Bronze Age was a vast interconnected system. The culmination of an unbroken cultural line which had existed since the first cities three thousand years before. Little did the inhabitants of these lands know however that from around 1200 BC their world would catastrophically and violently fall apart in a decades long cataclysm known as the Late Bronze Age Collapse.
