Round 2 Andrew Wilson and Kelly Powers debate the topic of: Is Western Society Better or Worse Off Because of the Protestant Reformation? Was the Protestant Reformation a good or bad thing? What caused the Protestant Reformation? How has the Protestant Reformation impacted the world? Is the United States better or worse? We are trying this again to have a better conversation debating this important topic. Though I disagree with Andrew Wilson on what he claimed in the previous one my composure was not the best and at times was not Christlike, of which I apologize. I reached out to Andrew privately apologizing for how it went overall. As a Christian I want to be representing my faith in the Lord in a manner that is mature, even when others disagree and don’t display maturity. This stream will be much better, and I do pray in all of this that good comes from it leading people to trust in Jesus Christ and get saved.
On the debate topic Andrew Wilson from the Eastern Orthodox Church believes the answer is no and Kelly Powers (myself) as an Evangelical Christian believes the answer is yes. Why did the Protestant Reformation happen? What caused the Protestant Reformation to protest the Roman Catholic Church? Protestants protested indulgences, taking a stand for justification by faith alone, Sola Scriptura and rejected the Magisterium authority claims, and rejected the Papacy.
In 1054 AD the Orthodox Church split from the Roman Catholic Church (first Protestants) because of Papal supremacy ie one Pope in an infallible authority over the church, and because of the Holy Spirit ie the Filioque. Orthodox believers believe the Holy Spirit only proceeds from the Father, whereas Roman Catholics and Protestants believe the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son, ie the Filioque. There are other areas of differences among Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants.
