This lesson introduces students to roughage, or dietary fibre, and explains why it is an essential part of a healthy diet despite providing little energy.

Using familiar food choices and everyday examples, students learn how fibre moves through the digestive system, absorbs water, supports peristalsis, and helps prevent constipation. The lesson also explores how certain types of fibre nourish beneficial gut bacteria, which produce substances that help keep the intestine healthy.

Students discover common sources of dietary fibre, the importance of eating washed fruits and vegetables with their peels when appropriate, and why a balanced diet includes not only energy-giving foods but also foods that support healthy digestion and overall well-being.
