Gee, Baby, Aint I Good to You (Andy Razaf, Don Redman) – 4:25
Gee Baby Aint I Good To You, the only standard tune in this
set, goes back to around 1930 and McKinneys Cotton Pickers,
whose director, Don Redman, wrote the music. Its a ballad,
says Kenny, but essentially its still the blues. Kennys elo-
quence is such that you can almost hear Andy Razafs lyrics on
his solo . . . its love makes me treat you the way I do..
- Leonard Feather from the original liner notes.

Soul Lament – 2:43
Soul Lament is Kennys personal - very personal - solo
message. Its on electric guitar, sure, but he doesnt lean on the
amplification as a crutch, and you are reminded, during this
exceptional performance, that Kenny has listened to Flamenco,
to the guitars of Spain as well as Charlie Christian. The way this
melody and its interpretation are constructed, its almost as if
Kenny were asking questions and answering them for himself.
Is it true the blues have really got you down? say the single
note lines, and Well, this is the way I feel this evening, reply
the chord patterns. This is a soulful lament indeed.
- Leonard Feather, from the original liner notes.

4. (Where Do I Begin?) ラブストーリー (フランシス・レイ、カール・シグマン) – 6:13
Henry Mancinis Theme from Love Story has nice
changes, and Cedar makes the most of them in the only
trio track of the album. Its comforting to know . . .
given the tragic connotations of Love Story ... that near
the end Cedar finds a new baby.
LYRICS
Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start
With her first hello
She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine
Thered never be another love, another time
She came into my life and made the living fine
She fills my heart
She fills my heart with very special things
With angels songs, with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go Im never lonely
With her around, who could be lonely
I reach for her hand, its always there
How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know Ill need her til the stars all burn away
And shell be there
How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know Ill need her til the stars all burn away
And shell be there

QUARTET
Gigi describes this as one of the most relaxed record-
ing sessions in which he has ever played. After setting
up the themes, everything was spontaneous even to the
length of the solos. There is much to be gleaned, as
always, from Monks originals and the one which Gigi
contributed is up to his usual high standard.
The interplay between Gigi and Monk creates much
excitement. In many instances, they take turns at carry-
ing the harmony.
Monks presence alone was inspiring to Gigi. They
first met in Boston in 1949 when they played together
at the Hi Hat. Since then they have stayed in touch music-
ally and socially. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and
Monk, the trinity of modern jazz, mean more to Gigi
than any other jazz musicians. He recounts learning many
things just being in their company. All were first aca-
demic and orthodox and then creative and unorthodox,
paralleling greats in any art form. Combining with Monk
here, led Gigi to his freest and most sparkling solos
on record.
Monk is ever the subtle master. His wonderful time
and harmonic invention are priceless assets which in-
crease in value with each hearing.
- Ira Gitler, from the original liner notes
