How do you make a living as a freelancer? As the media landscape changes, this question is at the front of many writers’ and creators’ minds. At Rotten Tomatoes’ first ever Critics Workshop, freelance writer and Switchblade Sisters podcast co-host April Wolfe tackles this question directly, drawing from her own experience to advise that as freelancers, “you’re in an open relationship.” That means: constantly be looking at new opportunities and publications, and constantly be developing new relationships with editors – because you never know when an outlet may shut its doors or shrink its budgets. Meanwhile, IndieWire Executive Editor and Chief Critic Eric Kohn speaks to the challenges of making freelance work your primary source of income.
