Rotten Tomatoes | Rotten Tomatoes' Critics Workshop - Building Your Community @RottenTomatoes | Uploaded October 2023 | Updated October 2024, 11 hours ago.
Freelance writer April Wolfe, IndieWire Executive Editor Eric Kohn, and Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley tackle two aspects of community-building for freelancers here: meeting folks IRL and utilizing “Film Twitter.” As part of our inaugural Critics Workshop, we invited five industry experts to join in a discussion with moderator Coley in which they gave us their top tips for those trying to forge a career in entertainment journalism, and inevitably the topic of community arose. Kohn speaks to the value of building in-person relationships and developing trust, while Wolfe says that the oft-derided corner of the Internet known as Film Twitter can be incredibly helpful for those who have questions about navigating a new festival or how to get into screenings. Both agree that connections with likeminded people can make you a more effective freelancer – and make the freelance life less isolating.
