On moorland behind Rothbury, Northumberland practice trenches were dug by the 18th(Service) Battalion (1st Tyneside Pioneers) Northumberland Fusiliers in the winter of 1915 to 1916. Troops trained here before being sent to face the trenches in France during the First World War.
