The world of XR continues its rapid evolution this week, with major admissions from Meta and exciting new hardware on the horizon.
This week, Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth finally addressed why the highly anticipated "Augments" feature, announced in 2023, is still missing. He revealed that the initial architecture "wasn't good enough" and had "huge trade-offs on performance," forcing the team to go back to the drawing board and rebuild the system from the ground up. On the software front, the v78 update has significantly improved the passthrough camera API's image quality for developers, while the more recent v79 update has reportedly been plagued with bugs and stability issues, requiring numerous hotfixes.
In community news, a recently discovered root exploit for the Quest 3 has allowed users to enable unreleased, work-in-progress features, such as panel pinning in Horizon OS. Looking to the future, reports suggest Meta's "Hypernova" AR glasses could ship with a surprisingly accessible $800 price tag.
Beyond Meta, the competition is heating up. Details have emerged about Vivo's new Vision Pro-style headset, which is reportedly 40% lighter and could be one-third of the price of Apple's device, all while running on a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 and featuring stunning Micro-OLED displays. In the open-source space, Lynx is developing a 6DOF positional tracking system for Android-based headsets, potentially opening the door for more DIY and third-party hardware.
