Built in 1872 by the City of New York, named the Blackwell, then Welfare and now the Roosevelt Island Lighthouse stands on this 3.5-acre park on the northern tip of the island.

Approximately 50 feet tall, constructed of stone quarried from the island, the lighthouse was operated untile 1940. It was completely restored in 1998.

James Renwick Jr., the lighthouse's architect, also designed St. Patrick's Cathedral on Manhattan's 5th Avenue.
