Just a quick video to show how room modes cause a peak at specific frequencies and the harmonics they produce. Also the "null" area in the middle of the room where the overlapping waves cancel each other out.
As you can see when I sweep the frequency up and down, every tone produces harmonics, but the tone that correspond with a room mode is problematic in that it will peak and dip more than other frequencies. This is also true for the harmonics of that frequency - as they bounce back and forth between parallel walls they build up and give a room a "pressurized" or "boomy" sound that the music doesn't have.
And remember that this room is already treated, so these problems are a LOT less obvious than they would be in an untreated room.
These might seem like issues only those of us that are really into this are worried about, but room acoustics is the single most effective way to improve the quality of your listening experience. Much, much more important than gear, the cables you use or whether the music you listen to is compressed.
