The book of Romans played a major role in the Protestant Reformation because it reveals God’s righteousness given to sinners by faith. After years of prayer and meditation, Martin Luther said, “Then finally God had mercy on me, and I began to understand that the righteousness of God is a gift of God by which a righteous man lives, namely faith.”
He discovered that he now no longer needed to look to his own works, behavior, or obedience to determine his standing before God. Jesus fulfilled the law, and he understood that the believer received the full righteousness of Jesus by faith now, not later. God declared the sinner righteous because he is covered in the righteousness of Christ.
Before Paul describes how we can gain the righteousness of God, he begins with the unrighteousness of man, so we fully understand the need for it.
