Rollo of Normandy began as a fierce and charismatic Viking warrior who led ruthless raids along the coasts of Britain and France during the dark ages. After many successful raids in France including his infamous siege in Paris, France's King, Charles the Simple decided to accept defeat by the Vikings. In 911, he negotiated with Rollo the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, which granted Rollo control over a swath of territory in northern France. In exchange for land and the promise of peace, Rollo agreed to end his raids and defend the region against further Viking incursions. In exchange, he became the first King of Normandy.
