Between DEVO tour dates late last year, Casale completed the new song with longtime DEVO touring members Josh Hager on guitar & keyboards, and drummer Jeff Friedl.
Why now?
The 4th of July kicks off the ‘America250’ celebration. “America is celebrating its freedom under the rule of a homegrown dictator. The irony was too irresistible.”
“What has happened here far surpasses our worst prognostications,” Casale tells Rolling Stone.
“The idea for the lyrics and concept came to me during Trump’s first administration in 2016. It was already obvious then that he was an anti-democratic tyrant. Since his return in 2024, he’s become exponentially more unhinged.”
Jeffrey Epstein also appears as the Teletubbies’ sun, while Elon Musk, Bill Gates, & Bill Clinton become twisted Teletubbies in the new “Just Do It!” music video.
Who made the new “Just Do It!” music video? Was AI used?
The script for the video was written by Casale & his longtime friend Max Papeschi, an Italian satirical artist. “He created the artwork and character designs which were then animated by his collaborator Maurizio Temporin,” says Casale. “They used Adobe Photoshop, motion-controlled animation, Adobe After Effects compositing, and selectively deployed minimal AI-enhanced tools for some specific transitions and 3D elements.”
What’s next for Casale?
“Just Do It!” is the first single from Gerald’s upcoming full-length solo album titled “Wetiko.”
What’s next for DEVO?
Casale says projects under consideration include a groundbreaking video game with a live music component, a graphic novel based on a full-length feature-film concept (in which DEVO travels through a wormhole into an alternate universe in 1984), & a limited performance run of concerts with a symphony orchestra.
