Today we salute Roger Hallam, an extraordinary 'global change maker.' Roger was a small, successful organic farmer in Wales employing many people. His farm operations were devastated by climate disruption, so he leased out the land, instead becoming a full-time, unfunded climate/ecological activist. He is intelligent, well-educated, brave, forceful, clever, highly principled individual, not satisfied just bemoaning his fate or asking, 'why me?' Instead, he focused on the more essential question, "How do we change what society does so that our children might survive?" Thus was born the #ExtinctionRebellion, whose fundamental principles include #TellTheTruth and #ActNow.
Like so many others, Roger remains unfunded in his activism. He cannot even afford an apartment in London, so moves from couch to couch among a circle of friends. There is little financial support for the real activists. Planet destructive, profit-making activities get funded. Environmental NGOs that focus on 'tweaks' to the status quo provide good greenwash 'cover' for business and industry; they get funded too.
Deep thinkers realize that recycling, changing light bulbs, or even substituting electric cars for gas-powered ones will NOT fix the problem. Like Roger, they insist upon fundamental changes to national and global governance, and are a threat to existing power structures and the wealthy elites that run the show on behalf of Money.
