In this video essay, we’re diving into a novel that doesn’t just depict a battle — it marks the transition from external existential threat to internal collapse. Our protagonist is David McCarthy. A war hero of Task Force Serpent. One of the few who left Huntress alive. Decorated. Honored. They are professional soldiers caught in political fracture. That moral greyness is one of the novel’s strengths. Most characters behave consistently with their established personalities. The political motivations feel believable. The power struggle is grounded in logistics and chain of command — not melodrama. But “Flashpoint” is not without problems. There are two awkward romantic interludes that feel unnecessary and tonally disruptive. More critically, Coleman stretches plausibility in two major moments: a heavy-handed information dump and a space battle that feels narratively engineered rather than organically earned. It’s not outright deus ex machina — but it is visible scaffolding. And perhaps the novel’s biggest weakness: the hook. This is not a fast read. The opening lacks urgency. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow. The tension builds gradually rather than explosively. But that may also be the point. “Flashpoint” isn’t about spectacle. It’s about transition. It’s about the moment when a united realm begins to fracture from within. It’s about soldiers forced to choose between loyalty to command and loyalty to home. For lore seekers — this is essential reading. For readers who enjoy measured, politically grounded storytelling — it delivers.
