ROCKET SUMMER is a new summer reading event, created by @michaelk.vaughan8617 in which we are reading CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION for the month of July. In this third week, we read classic science fiction from the 1950's. I read Ray Bradbury's fix-up novel, THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES, and some short stories by Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clarke, and Clifford D. Simak. In this video, I will be speaking only about The Martian Chronicles, which was also a frequently banned book. I will be discussing its history as a banned book for my participation in the Read 24 in 2024 Banned Book Challenge in addition to talking about it as a great sample of science fiction writing in the 1950's. I will discuss the short stories that I read by the other giants in the field in my 1950's Wrap-Up, Part Two.
The month is focused in the following way:
Week 1: The Beginnings of SF in the 19th Century through 1939
Week 2: SF from 1940 through 1949
Week 3: SF from 1950 through 1959
Week 4: SF from 1960 through 1969
