On August 23, 2014 journalist Robert Scheer received the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains (PDSMM), Tim Carpenter Courage Award for Lifetime Achievement.
This is a video recording of Robert Scheer's full speech at the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains birthday party on August 23, 2014 - Scheer received the PDSMM Tim Carpenter Courage Award for Lifetime Achievement. In this video Mr. Scheer talks about being pressured not to accept the award and not to speak at the event because Congressman Henry Waxman was also slated to be honored. Scheer talks about his time as editor of Ramparts during Vietnam War and objects to the demonization of the Palestinian people. And much more...
Mr. Scheer's journalism career spans from the 1960s when he served as Vietnam correspondent, managing editor and editor in chief for the premier leftist publication of its time - Ramparts Magazine to his current position as writer and editor in chief for the award winning online publication Truthdig.
His columns appear in newspapers across the country, and his in-depth interviews have made headlines.
From 1976 to 1993 he worked as a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, writing on diverse topics such as the Soviet Union, arms control, national politics and the military. In 1993 he launched a nationally syndicated column based at the Los Angeles Times, where he was named a a contributing editor. That column ran weekly for the next 12 years and is now based at Truthdig.
Scheer can regularly be heard on KPFK's 4PM Thursday Truthdig Radio show as well as "Left, Right and Center" on KCRW. He is currently a clinical professor of communications at USC's Annenburg School for Communication and Journalism. He's written nine books, including "Thinking Tuna Fish, Talking Death: Essays on the Pornography of Power"; With Enough Shovels: Reagan, Bush and Nuclear War"; "America After Nixon: The Age of Multinationals"; with his son Christopher and Lakshmi Chaudhry, "The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us about Iraq"; "Playing President: How Defense Hawks Hijacked 9/11 and Weakened America." Scheer's latest book, The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street" was released on September 7, 2010.
Scheer was raised in the Bronx, where he attended public schools and graduated from City College of New York. He studied as a Maxwell Fellow at Syracuse University and was a fellow at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he did graduate work in economics.
He is a contributing editor for The Nation as well as a Nation Fellow. He has also been a Poynter Fellow at Yale, and was a fellow in arms control at Stanford.
Scheer received the 2010 Distinguished Work in New Media Award from the Society of Professional Journalists' Greater Los Angeles Chapter, and in 2011 Ithaca College awarded him the Izzy Award for outstanding achievement in independent media.
