ROBERT RUNCIE – Archbishop of Canterbury from 1980 to 1991.
Robert Runcie was selected as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1979. During his time as Archbishop of Canterbury he witnessed a breaking down of traditionally convivial relations between the Conservative Party, then in Government, and the Church of England, which was habitually described as "the Tory party at prayer". In 1985, there was considerable friction between the Church the Government, in particular the cabinet minister Norman Tebbit, over a church report, "Faith in the City", which criticised the government's handling of social problems in British inner-city areas.
Theologically speaking Runcie was a conservative, especially compared with David Jenkins, the then Bishop of Durham, who spoke of the resurrection in more metaphorical terms. The satirical TV series SPITTING IMAGE often had sketches with Runcie and Jenkins where Runcie’s perceived naive approach to Christian orthodoxy was much mocked. Steve Nallon provided the voice of The Archbishop on the show.
In 1981, Runcie officiated at the marriage of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer.
