More than 16 years after Robert Pickton was convicted of killing six women in British Columbia, a legal battle is being waged over evidence seized during the investigation.

Pickton, who was a pig farmer, was found guilty in 2007 on six counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of women who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. He was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 25 years.

More than a decade later, Global News has learned the RCMP received permission by the courts to destroy three freezers full of meat products and other items. They say the freezers lost power and did not contain human remains.

But as Rumina Day reports, advocates are demanding to know what proof the RCMP has that the items in the freezers no longer have evidentiary value.
