Music as an Act of Becoming: An Interview on Creativity, Faith, and the Future
For me, music is far more than sound. It is an extended expression of the self in constant renewal of experience. It has carried me through love, loss, and rebirth, especially in my relationship with God and Christ. In that sense, music becomes an apotheosis of personal expression — a way of becoming more fully who one is.
Is Music Fantasy?
In composition, music naturally enters the realm of fantasy. It becomes a creative space for both composer and listener, a vehicle through which we can imagine, redefine, and reflect on our inner experience. Fantasy in music is not escapism; it is transformation — a way of reshaping how we perceive emotion and memory.
If Not Music, Then What?
If I had not become a professional musician, I would likely have been a physiotherapist or a counsellor. Both professions, like music, revolve around healing, listening, and helping people reconnect with themselves.
The Aging Classical Audience
There is often concern that the classical music audience is growing older. I believe, however, that there is still enough patronage and genuine appreciation to inspire a new generation of listeners and composers. Classical music has survived centuries of change, and its depth continues to resonate when presented with sincerity.
Music in the 21st Century
With the advent of artificial intelligence, people may naturally develop a greater musical awareness. Yet creativity remains a complex compromise between intuition and structure. This technological shift may actually catalyze a new Renaissance — transforming the musical past into a new present and opening unexpected creative pathways.
Creativity and Intuition
My own work is largely intuitive. Creativity and spontaneity are not optional; they are central to the process. Music is not only constructed — it is discovered. Intuition becomes the compass that guides form, harmony, and emotional truth.
Reaching a Younger Audience
To attract younger audiences, musicians must stay connected to contemporary technology and the ways people now interact with art. Engaging with modern platforms and formats allows classical music to speak in a language today’s listeners understand without losing its depth.
The Creative Process
Most of my composing begins at the piano and is intuitively discerned. I refine and combine motifs that together tell a story.
One of my favorite pieces is Spiritual Ascent, composed several years ago on an old Russian piano. I first explored its chords and arpeggios before recording a version of it. The aim was to uplift the mood — almost as if the music itself were learning to fly.
Advice for Young Listeners
Even if you cannot yet play the classical pieces you love, studying chords, harmony, and texture can deepen your connection to them. Active listening — especially with the score — helps develop understanding and appreciation. Classical music reveals its richness when approached with curiosity and patience.
Composing for an Audience
When I compose for film, I think carefully about who will be listening. When writing simpler scores or songs, I also consider the target audience — whether adults or teenagers. Music always exists in relation to those who receive it.
Current Projects
Recently, I completed a video storyboarding project using my own music, titled The Children of Light. My piano compositions were orchestrated and arranged by a Canadian composer. It functions as a conceptual framework — a kind of lightning rod — for a potential film or series.
I am also open to collaborating with others on projects that use my music in film, song, or multimedia.
