This interview with the late Robbin Crosby took place on May 9, 1984. At the time, Ratt had released their self-titled EP and first full-length album. Out of the Cellar. Their hit song “Round and Round” was climbing the charts and its video was in regular rotation on MTV. (On the same day, I interviewed Robbin's co-guitarist in the band, Warren DeMartini. Here's the link to that interview: youtube.com/watch?v=QZHMDFc7GpQ.)
These never-before-released 1984 interviews give a lot of insight into the inner-workings of Ratt, such as how Robbin and Warren decided who’d play what part, the guitars and other gear they used, and the differences in their styles.
If you haven’t already heard them, I invite you to check out my longer 1988 interviews with Warren and Robbin. (Warren: youtube.com/watch?v=LyJNaYGuj9o&t=167s. Robbin: youtube.com/watch?v=wMz_MvTm9O4&t=160s.) I hope you enjoy these conversations!
If you're into 1980s hard rock/heavy metal guitarists, check out the "Talking Guitar" podcasts with young Eddie Van Halen, AC/DC's Angus and Malcom Young, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Joe Satriani, Vivian Campbell, and others. And subscribe! There are lots more interviews to come!
Thanks to engineer/producer Nik Hunt for filming the intro and enhancing the sound of the 40-year-old master tape.
