We found a copperhead snake in the road while road cruising on the shortest night of the year — plus rat snakes, a ribbon snake, and a surprise baby glass lizard along the way. Copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) are one of the most commonly encountered venomous snakes in the southeastern U.S., and this night out delivered more than one close encounter.
Watch as we search backroads before an incoming storm, spot copperhead snakes camouflaged against the asphalt, and work through some tricky snake identification in real time — including a mix-up that had us questioning our own eyes.
