Roaches hate Vaseline (no sound). (Please read ALL the details, click MORE)
Possibly a Pycnoscelus surinamensis (Surinam cockroach) from USA.
(filmed in 1996 by a friend at his house).
NOTE: There is clear packing tape below the Vaseline, this was the first attempt to make it climb-proof, however, this species has absolutely NO PROBLEM climbing clear packing tape and even though the tape isn't 100% flat over the entire area, it has been observed running circles around on the tape many times and never even for an instant loses it's grip. *Above the tape is the Vaseline*, it has cocoa butter in it because he couldn't find the normal stuff. The Vaseline was not smeared in a perfect band, so when it goes up on the left side, the Vaseline has a gap there where it had to go up higher to reach Vaseline.
It should be noted, that I have read messageboards and seen videos that people say to use a 3 to 4 inch strip of Vaseline and also where people claim you should only use a THIN layer and also, that *you will STILL get random few ESCAPES of baby roaches.*
I think maybe something like fly paper should be put after the Vaseline layer, so if any make it past the Vaseline, they will die inside the container, safe from your home.
I recommend against using butter, based on the fact they eat cocoa butter, though I don't know anything about cocoa butter. Regardless, check out what this clever guy did. youtube.com/watch?v=YIeiIfz4xvk
